Mudryk, 58, is a longtime disability rights advocate and attorney, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Alameda Superior Court Judge Victoria Kolakowski became the state’s first openly transgender judge when she was elected in 2010, KXTV reported.

“Andi Mudryk is a great appointment and will be a wonderful judge,” Kolakowski tweeted, according to the television station. “I’m glad to finally have a trans colleague on the bench in California.”

“She (Kolakowski) is a wonderful person, a wonderful judge,” Mudryk told the Chronicle.

Mudryk’s appointment comes three days after another Newsom appointee became the first Latina to be confirmed to the California Supreme Court. The state's judiciary is among the nation’s most diverse, and has become more so under the governor. https://t.co/asYHqQtlyo

Mudryk fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Benjamin Davidian, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“I’m humbled, honored and I’m thrilled,” Mudryk told the newspaper on Friday. “I’m grateful to Gov. Newsom for creating a vision of California for all.”

Mudryk spent the first half of her legal career in private practice, including nearly 11 years with Disability Rights California, the Times reported. She served as managing attorney, director of litigation and deputy director.

She also served as director of litigation and policy advocacy at Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County from 2017 to 2018 and executive director at Disability Rights Advocates in 2017, Newsom’s office said.

Most recently, Mudryk has been the chief deputy director at the state Department of Rehabilitation and was the department’s chief counsel from 2018 to 2020, the Chronicle reported.

“As governors and state legislatures across the country attack the trans community, we applaud Gov. Newsom’s continued commitment to increasing trans representation,” Tony Hoang, executive director of Equality California, said in a statement. “California continues to remind the rest of the country that LGBTQ+ voices are essential to achieve full equality.”

Mudryk earned her law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1989, according to the Times.
