Announcements and Suggestions / Migration Update 4/24/24
« on: April 24, 2024, 12:00:27 PM »
Well I'm not happy. I have yet to receive an update since last Friday from vB Support.
I fully suspect that we're done or near completion but have not heard about the DNS settings I need for the new cloud host.

I also have a problem of my own making, I completely forgot about some essential email addresses using the @calguns.net domain that have to exist however vB Cloud does not offer domain email hosting, just the forum software. So now I'm scrambling to figure out how to use the domain to both host the site and host email separately. Without having to pay for yet another server.

This is totally on me, I've never had a hosting account that did not include domain hosting but I should have verified first.

Announcements and Suggestions / Migration Update
« on: March 13, 2024, 12:27:36 PM »
The Cloud update and migration is set up, I have the cloud account already. The migration is waiting for some info they asked about.
This is part of what they sent me after setting up the account.

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in migrating to the vBulletin Cloud product.
The first step is to close your forum to new posts/registrations via AdminCP.  The reason for this is simple - we can't do partial imports, only a FULL database import.   If you don't close your forum before backing up, any new threads, posts or new registrations will NOT be moved over to your Cloud site as they will not be included in the backup you give us.
Please note that custom styles that are not Style Variable and CSS changes ONLY (i.e. third party styles with custom images) and plugins will not be migrated. Custom styles and plugins are not compatible with vBulletin Cloud.

After I get them the info they want it's likely we'll be down for a day or two.
Also the plugins they refer to include iTrader, I've looked for ways to make it work with the newer vB versions but it's almost 20 years old and not current at all. I'm still looking for a replacement for iTrader that will work.

For the last year the site has definitely had some issues, we had to move to a new server in 01/23 and the new server's MySQL version conflicted with our older software which caused the slow loading or failures to load as well as odd text and exceptions.
I have been working with the developers of our forum software to update to a current version since May of 2023 but that has taken far longer than it should have due to the proprietary control panel on the new server.

Rather than continuing on what has been too long a path to make the updated software work on our private server I’m switching gears.
I’m moving to cloud hosting with vBulletin. This should not only resolve the current issues but improve our update process as they will be installing updates, patches and upgrades automatically.

Barring any unexpected problems this transition will be occurring this month. According to vB's answer to yesterday's question I sent
'You can start by purchasing the Gold Plan, and we will manually upgrade you to the custom Enterprise Plan we discussed after.
Please let us know once you have purchased so we can initiate the upgrade and migration.'

I will be starting the process today by purchasing the cloud subscription, as soon as I hear of a definitive time for the upgrade and migration I will post it here, on calguns.org and on the Calguns Members group on FB.

Announcements and Suggestions / Latest on the software issue. 2/13/24
« on: February 13, 2024, 04:01:24 PM »
First off I want to thank everyone for being so patient with this mess, I really do appreciate it.

I am getting really F'N pissed at vBulletin. Not only does support leave you dangling apparently sales does as well!

On December 19 I heard from them regarding the software update, 'working on it'.
Mid to late Jan. I ask for an update and was told 'I'll look in to it tomorrow'
As of today I guess it's still not 'tomorrow'.
All of this is after having to chase them down to begin with.

A week or so ago I decided to look at other options, specifically some of the cloud hosted options offered by vBulletin and Xenforo.
They host their own software on their cloud server, you own the data, database and have autonomy to run your site as you want to.
Software and server updates and upgrades are handle by them behind the scenes so you're always on the newest release.

I sent the same email to both vB and Xenforo, Identical wording except changing the names.
There was a follow up by both, Xenforo withing a day, vB within a couple of days, asking about traffic stats.
Within 18 hours of my reply with the info on our traffic I received an email from Xenforo with an estimate on monthly hosting costs, new license cost and conversion/migration costs.
So far I haven't received a second reply from vB.

Today I sent a brand new sales request to vB with all the info they asked for in the previous discussion. If I don't hear from them within 48 hours I will be asking them for a refund for both the vB5 license and the Paid Install/Upgrade service.

I would like to stay with vB, I am familiar with it, already paid for the license, service and for a custom template for vB5 that replicates CGN's colors and theme.
But we can not wait for them any longer so either they sh!t or get off the damn pot.

Announcements and Suggestions / Slow downs and outages on CGN
« on: January 01, 2023, 05:52:23 PM »
As of today our host company, GeoVario/Professional Edge, is shutting down their hosting business.

Because of some personal family issues I was delayed in finding a new host and getting us moved.

GV/PE is keeping our servers alive beyond the close of business while we arrange the transfer but with the other servers going down we will likely have some periods of slow loading or relatively brief outages.

Likely this upcoming week we will be moving to the new dedicated server which will mean a day of being offline between moving and the DNS repopulating.

Server Move and Outage Reports / .net outage 7/18/2021
« on: July 18, 2021, 04:17:32 PM »
I've noticed that .net is down, it seems there is an issue contacting the file server even from the hosting control panel.

I'm working on it.

Server Move and Outage Reports / Slow loading 6/29/17 17:30?
« on: June 29, 2017, 05:32:42 PM »
Anyone else having a hard time loading the site?

I'm afraid I may have crashed the site with the news of the injunction in the Duncan v. Becerra case!

Server Move and Outage Reports / Yes we're down, yes I'm an idiot.
« on: October 20, 2016, 11:04:30 AM »
We're down, I did something stupid trying to clean up the server by getting rid of an old test database.

By all rights what I did should have just deleted the test database but as soon as I clicked 'go' it all went to shit.

Restore is happening and we should be up soon.

Server Move and Outage Reports / CGN having issues loading
« on: September 28, 2016, 12:08:59 AM »
I'm not sure why as of yet but it seems that we're having some kind of issue with CGN.
I've already notified the hosting company and its being looked in to.

I can access the file server and the database server easily so I'm wondering if it is a DDOS attack.

As soon as I know I'll post what I find.

2nd Amend. Politics and Law / 6/30/2016 CALL GOV BROWN!!
« on: June 30, 2016, 03:59:39 PM »
Just because Calguns.net is down doesn't mean we stop calling!!
We have the info right here!

URGENT!!!
CALL, FAX or EMAIL GOV.BROWN TODAY!!

Below is a complete list of the bills passed today [6/30], Governor Brown has said he will look at and sign or veto them TOMORROW!

Call, fax and email him TODAY and urge him to VETO ALL OF THEM!!

AB 1664 (Levine & Ting): AB 1664 would extend the definition of an assault weapon to include all semi-automatic rifles and pistols with a removable magazine and that use “bullet button”. For example, an AR-15 would be included in this.

AB 1673 (Gipson): AB 1673 would take the definition of a firearm and extend to it include any unfinished frames or receivers that can be converted into a weapon. This bill could make any object that is associated with a firearm subject to the same regulations that apply to firearms.

AB 1674 (Santiago): AB 1674 would add to the current restrictions that are placed on an individual in regards to how many firearms they can purchase in a 30 day period. Current law states that only one handgun can be purchased in this time period but if this legislation is passed, long guns would fall under this restriction as well.

AB 1695 (Bonta): AB 1695 would require the Attorney General to send individuals a pamphlet regarding all firearm laws, how to safely store your weapon, and gun trafficking. This measure would result in wasteful government spending as criminals will not be receiving these pamphlets, only law-abiding gun owners who are already aware of this information.

AB 2607 (Ting): AB 2607 would allow an employer, coworker or mental health worker to file a restraining order on an individual to keep them from owning a gun. This individual would not be allowed to defend themselves until 21 days later. In this time, they would have their right to bear arms stripped from them, regardless if the claims were true or not..

SB 1235 (De León): SB 1235 requires background checks for ammunition purchasers, licenses to sell ammunition, and collection of sale information. Restrictions on ammunition purchases, creates a DOJ database of ammunition owners. Bans internet / out of state ammunition purchase.

SB 880 (Hall, Glazer): SB 880 redefines assault weapons to encompass specified guns capable of accepting any type of detachable magazine. Bans common and constitutionally protected firearms that have magazine locking devices.

SB 1446 (Hancock): SB 1446 prohibits the possession of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Confiscation of lawfully acquired, standard capacity magazines that can hold over 10 rounds.

SB 894 (Jackson): SB 894 requires the reporting of a lost or stolen gun within 5 days of when a person knows or reasonably should have known of the theft or loss. Victimizes victims by criminalizing the failure to report lost and stolen firearms.

We urge you to contact the Governor and let him know that you will not stand for any of the anti-firearm bills passed in the legislature today and urge him to veto all of them. To contact his office you can call:

Would it be easier to read with a more neutral color scheme?

Off Topic Discussion / Apology
« on: November 24, 2015, 12:47:06 PM »
I'd like to offer my sincere and heartfelt apology to those who, because of this outage at this time of year, will not be able to log in to Calguns.net and instead will be forced to spend the holidays actually interacting with their families.
I know the kind of scarring this can leave and you have my sympathies...

Server Move and Outage Reports / New DNS Settings
« on: March 06, 2013, 11:04:53 AM »
Calguns.net's hosting company, GeoVario, has merged with Professional Edge hosting, this happened some months ago actually.

Today I received an email advising me of an update to the DNS settings to correctly point them to Professional Edge.

These will take time to propagate, hopefully this will be a smooth transition however if there are any issues this would be the cause.

If you can not reach Calguns.net on a Windows computer try opening a command prompt or DOS window and typing ipconfig /flushdns this should refresh your DNS settings and pnt them correctly.

Server Move and Outage Reports / 1/16/2013 slow down/timeouts
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:46:10 PM »
Well, we're still having issues with access.
I can access the database server with relative ease but the front end server seems to be spotty as far as connection speed and access.

In looking at the server side of things I am wondering if our issues are internal or external, I will be checking with GV staff.

Server Move and Outage Reports / Outage/Slowdown 07/06/2012
« on: July 06, 2012, 07:26:50 PM »
For those experiencing a slowdown or inability to get to Calguns.net there is a reason.
I received this email from GeoVario:

Quote
Well we can only assume we are doing something right.

As we said only 2 days ago when we wished you all the best on the 4th of July - that we stand as a - 1st Amendment friendly hosting provider.

So someone... or a lot of zombie-fied computer someones - really didn't like what we said...

We are now in 2+ hours of - enduring a flat out Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack that has done it's best to remove us as entire company from the Internet.

We are somewhat happy to say - we are able to send email and most of your websites are running as expected.

Unfortunately some are not.

For those of you who have noticed your websites are offline right now we are doing our best to get them all back online - by changing public IPs to a range that is not under attack.

For customers on the ASP platform; or people using Dedicated IPs ( on ASP or LAMP ) - your sites are not affected by this attack.

The attack was designed to cripple our core shared services.  And we had to have our upstream fiber providers block specific destination IPs in our network - to allow the rest of the sites to continue without interruption.

Thank you for being our customer, and thank you for your patience during this time.

Since Calguns is a majoruser of GeoVario resources it's not surprising that we're being hit by this DDOS too.

Hopefully this can be resolved quickly and we'll be back up soon.

I've contacted GeoVario about it and we should be back up shortly.

Server Move and Outage Reports / Sporadic outages and slow load times
« on: February 03, 2012, 10:01:33 PM »
It seems that some are able to get on to CGN and some are not, those that are either have fast load times and others have slow load times.

I was able to get on to CGN with quick load times from work through Qwest but from home with ATT U-Verse I can not get the forum to load at all.
However my iPhone using ATT's 3G can get on CGN fairly quickly.

I would like to know for those having problems who your ISP is and where in CA you are located so we can track down if it's specific to one or two ISPs or geographical locations.

This is a pain in the butt but we'll get through it.

I'm looking in to it and will update this as soon as I know what is going on.
