It was the "Today's Posts" search that was giving the 500 error.  Everything is back to normal now.

We are currently upgrading from MyISAM to InnoDB.
Calguns.net has been growing a lot and there are a lot more people reading and posting in tens of thousands of threads at any given moment.
This is a huge performance issue for the default table engine that vBulletin uses, MyISAM, as that engine locks the entire table unlike InnoDB, which locks the rows inside the table instead. The problem comes from the massive query that is required to sort through all those posts, update the thread when new replies happen and to update individual posts when an edit is made, because these slow queries pile up, locking the post table for others.

InnoDB is suppose to alleviate much of the problems we've been having so we're going to give it a try.
GeoVario recently (in the last week or so) upgraded our servers and we've found that throwing hardware at the issue isn't helping so now we're trying to upgrade various software aspects.

Thank you for you patience, Calguns.net will reopen very shortly, hopefully much faster and without the double/triple/quadruple posts!

Wow. Surprised MyISAM lasted this long.  And surprised somebody would setup the forums DB to use MyISAM in the first place.
Besure to use "innodb_file_per_table" as well. It'll save you headaches and pains down the road.

Looks like it's back. I see new posts.

8
Just wild (Im stupid) guess -- this could happen if the database has become read-only or somehow writes are blocked.
If the code that does the database interface doesn't time out, this would be the behavior.

9
confirmed. Looks like it doesn't take any new posts. I was trying to reply to 1 thread and my browser just spins.

Maybe Kes and team are working on the double and triple post issue?

Server Move and Outage Reports / Re: 4/23/12 Database server down
« on: April 24, 2012, 12:27:34 PM »
Doesn't look good when a DB server is down for so long.

If it had any redundant setup, it should be minutes to fix.
If it had any basic hardware issues, it should be less than 1 hour to fix
Multiple hours/over night usually means a problem with the underlying data or hardware they don't have spares for.

I'm a bit surprised that GeoVario doesn't have monitoring for this.

Server Move and Outage Reports / Re: Yeah, we're down...
« on: October 20, 2009, 04:03:40 PM »
Yup, we're back up, I'd like to take credit for it but it's really the GeoVario staff and mcubed that did the work.

This one was odd.. the front end server stopped responding and when the datacenter checked the physical computer it was turned off.
We're still trying to find out if it was a heat sensor that panicked, a power glitch or clumsy cleaning crew with a mop...  :o

in the datacenter server environment, assuming the GeoVario staff know their stuff, the most common cause is bad
hardware (power supply/fan).  Servers are typically setup to auto power-on if it ever loss power. So having it in the
off state means either somebody halted it or bad power supply.

Hmmm... calguns.net dropped off DNS

--> official name servers for calguns.net domain
% dig ns calguns.net @f.gtld-servers.net +short
ns1.dreamns.net.
ns2.dreamns.net.

--> the 2 official servers don't have records for calguns.net
% dig calguns.net @ns1.dreamns.net +short
% dig calguns.net @ns2.dreamns.net +short

The DB is safe, we've got a lot pulling on the DB server right now so it's being bogged down.
Should be better shortly.

Let me know if you need any technical help. I do this kind of thing for my day job.

Damn, another database error. Can the DB be saved?

I don't think the data is at risk. This kind of database errors typically result from timeout or out of resources.

Not sure if it's a good idea the publish that on a public forum.
Can I have a "not enough" choice?

We've been having some issues with our current hosting company so this forum was set up in case the original had problems. Then we could let everyone know what was happening.

If you don't mind me asking: what kind of problems?

I think that was before calguns.net got moved to cdglobal.  The old hosting provider had stability issue as they over subscribed their servers.  Calguns was eating up too much resources and got turned off a few times. Anyways, ancient history.
