Saiga Rifles
« on: October 12, 2008, 09:14:53 PM »
Raaaar!!!  I'm trying to get some info on Saiga rifles in CA for someone and the main site's down!

Can someone give me a basic refresher?  I just want to make sure I'm not spreading any FUD.

Russian American Arms (RAA) is legal. I believe EAA (European American Arms) Saiga is also legal. That is all I know that make them, except the banned one (Kalishnikov USA).

DD's Ranch has RAA Saigas. I believe Coldwar shooters also.

Go get them - but in what flavor? .223/.308 - 16"/20"

This guy on another forum's saying that his best option as a "go-to" gun in CA is an SKS, and I'm trying to give him some options he may not be aware about.

Personally I think a 16" .223 would be a great for this, but we'll see what he says.

A Saiga wouldn't need a BB if it didn't have a pistol grip, right?

With a 10 round or less magazine, I believe so.  That's my plan for a self-loading rifle I can bring to CA with me, anyway.  I've just got to make sure the larger magazines stay out of CA.

I would stick to a 7.62 with a rifle made for 7.62. It is a better round for the Saiga anyway. And you can use the cheap wolf. But I guess Wolf sells cheap .223 also. So it doesn't matter.

I'd get a 16" in .308 - Bet that thing would be loud too.

Turns out the guy just wants to have a rifle with a pistol grip, and he'd rather have the pistol grip than detachable mags.  Thus, he's going the SKS with Tapco stock route.  Oh well, at least I tried . . .

Did you show him pics of WASRs with BBs?

You can't convert everyone.  SKSs are pretty good rifles, too.  They were once worth the $150-200 they cost.  At $400...  less so.

I have to throw in a +1 for DD's Ranch too!  Got one from them last Christmas (I buy myself the coolest stuff!) and it has been awesome!

I'm a little late to the game here, but my Saiga is a go to rifle.  It's modified to accept AK mags, like my preban 30's and drum.  It has no pistol grip or other 'evil' features.  Think Socom on the cheap.

THE MOST EVIL FEATURE YOU CAN HAVE IS QUICKLY DETACHABLE HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES

How big a deal is it to covert one for double stack mags?

Mine already accepted double stack mags.  If you want it to accept standard AK mags, you'll need to install a bullet guide and modify the mag catch.  I got my bullet guide from Dinzag.  You just drill and tap a hole in the front trunion, and bolt it in.  Pretty straightforward deal, probably takes all of 5 minutes.  There are a couple of different types, but his website has good pics.

The locking tab on Saiga mags is thinner than AK mags.  You'll need to fit the top of the mag catch lever until an AK mag fits nicely and fully locks into place.

Ross, did you have to switch out other parts to meet 922 compliance? Or am I just smoking out of date hash? ;D

I just bought a Saiga .223 from Gilbert's Guns (on the internet). It shoots great. I have added 30 round mags, a pistol grip, 6 position butt stock and a new forend (handguard). These parts make it compliant with the 30 round mag.  I have the original mag up for sale in the "For Sale" section of this forum. Check it out if you need a mag.  I am not going to do a conversion at this time, I like it just the way it is, plus I can go back to original if I have too.
