About the power of a 7.62x39.  I have a circa 1971 Winchester 94.  My neighbor has one from 1952 but with an added peep sight and more wear I got him for $150 OTD this year.

No vest here. I am thinking of getting a shooting jacket though. No need for a vest. I could see one for hunting and stuff, but that wouldn't be a tac vest would it?

You are going to end up with a Marlin most likely if you want to find a good deal.  Mossberg is also making .30-30 lever guns again now.

Like most military stuff, they are cumbersome and just weigh you down. I look at it like, if SHTF, we will only be using our rifles for as long as it takes to get an FA. If you are lucky enough to live that long. If you get an FA, you will get everything that goes along with it.

Well very true, but if SHTF i would perfer a semi .308 big hitter caliber, cetme, fal , m14, and all those battle rifles, over a full auto

Older pre 1964 Winchesters tend to go for pretty expensive.  Any Winchester 94 is going for a premium though because Winchester stopped making them in 2006 after over a 100 years.

My great uncle preferred the M14 in Vietnam and Korean DMZ.  He liked the added power, it is heavy to carry though and you can't pack as much ammo with you.

Not really sure, not my area of expertise and the market is volatile/speculative on them.  Try to get a Winchester, your dad will probably want it to be so.  We can take him to shoot mine if you want.
