So my cheap ammo adventure at K-Mart...long story short, they didn't have any that would ring up with the sale price of $3.69 a box so I got a raincheck for 20 boxes of 12 ga & 20 boxes of 20ga. at $3.29 per box. Let's see if this ever pans outs.

No it's high brass birdshot. Normal price is like $7-$14 per box.

if i buy an ak that has screws in the front..essentially a screw build by the handguards, can i replace those with rivets ?

Yes.  You'll have to pop out the barrel pin, press out the barrel, rivet it together then press the barrell back in, set the pin, and verify headspace.  Would be about a 2 hour job if you haven't done it before.  Rear trunion is a bit easier.  Should come apart easier since its already been done once...
