i'm encountering delay reply/posting time.

There was a considerable amount of lag time between clicking post and having the thread post a few minutes ago for me.

Sufficient time to actually come here, log in, and check this thread after waiting a bit over there.

The next post went... 'faster,' but still lagged a bit.

ETA: It just took nearly a full minute between clicking "Post Reply" and it actually posted a 2 line reply to a thread.

I have my oldest son mow the lawn, but I have to get out there and trim the hedges. I don

I've needed to trim the bushes for a couple of years.  Haven't been able to work up the umph necessary.  I keep telling myself that, this year, it's gonna happen.

But, I've gotta mow the lawn first.  Then water.  I'm just having trouble with the idea of 'watering' this early.  Usually, I don't need to start until into June.

Of course, with .net currently inaccessible, more time for Wordle, lawn mowing, watering, etc.  Oh, goodie.

Maybe I need to go do some fishing and/or shooting.

Yep.  I've been getting the same error screen for about 4 hours.

Managed to get on... once.  Logged in.  Looked at my notifications.  Clicked one... vapor lock.  Haven't been able to access the site since.

It says it's a cache problem; e.g., the cloud's cache doesn't match what's at the site.

I've been trying for about 4 hrs.  I got through, once.  I managed to log in, look at my notifications, click a notification... then it vapor locked.

Since then, I can't even get to the site.

I don't have an image hosting service or I'd show you the error page.  But, it says it's definitely with the site, not me or the cloud.

I gotta mow the lawn today or this week, at least, and it's supposed to be hot.  I'm not sure if that's 'good.'  But, I'm still on the right side of the dirt, so I'll take it.

When I say I got lucky... I entered with term "LIDAR" out of curiosity to see if it would take it.  It did, which gave me 4 of the 5 letters, with 3 of them in order and the 4th one a known.

The problem?  LIDAR is an acronym - Light Detection and Ranging - not an actual word so far as I can determine.  Still, the dictionary does count it as a word - lidar... https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lidar  So, I guess it counts.

Yeah.  I watch a little too much National Geographic some weeks; i.e., Lost Cities Revealed with Albert Lin... https://www.nationalgeographic.com/tv/show/bf19b4f2-43f2-4b4c-b939-df6b91db6e43

Just so the answer is provided here - https://www.calguns.net/forum/general-discussion/the-off-topic-discussion-lounge/54005160-anyone-notice-the-default-font-size-seems-to-have-increased?p=54009045#post54009045...

It depends on which style you're using. I've been using the Gradient style as a test bed to increase fonts in various locations.
I did up the font size on the Calguns vb6 style after it went live.

As the announcement at the top of the page states - https://www.calguns.net/ ...

Go to the bottom of the page, lower left corner, select the style selector and choose 'Calguns vb6'. The style is from the original forum and the text is larger.

It looks alright to me.  Larger font, not as harsh on the eyes, less 'wasted' space...

It'll take a little getting used to the 'full screen' effect; but, for now, I'm willing to give it a go.

I'm still trying to get someone else over there to acknowledge seeing what I'm seeing.

But, it appears, at least to me, that the default font size has been increased.

Nothing has changed in the settings on my end, so it has to be something someone (Kestryll?) did on their end.

If you go to the .net version and click a thread, it appears that a 'blue' background is now present on posts.  See - https://www.calguns.net/forum/firearms-discussions/rimfire-firearms/54003114-browning-sa-22-new-or-used-for-same-price

It doesn't seem to be 'universal' for the entirety of the site though.

i expected some problems and i know in time it will be fixed. so far i'm satisfied how fast it's running and getting used to dark mode. i'll leave the complaints to others (although i have few but no big deal) who are not shy to announce them.

I'm kinda hoping the new 'style' Kestryll is working on comes to fruition as it's a close resemblance to the old one.

CGN Style Sample LESS BLINDING WHITE!! - https://www.calguns.net/forum/calguns-net/announcements-and-suggestions/53998715-cgn-style-sample-less-blinding-white

I'm currently using the "Gradient" setting so a good part of the background is darker; but, I too would like things toned down a bit and not just in terms of the 'brightness' if you get my drift.

people complain for the sake of complaining?

meh... nothing world ending or really making the experience degraded over .net.

they want kes and the team to provide them coffee and donuts too while whinning. ;D

Both are true, in a sense.  The trick is differentiating between the two; i.e., the 'grumbling' vs. the seemingly 'oblivious' who cry that it's over.

While a certain amount of 'grumbling' is to be expected, too much of it comes from cries of foul and disaster over things which we were told would happen.  A certain amount stems from people who appeared to be oblivious of the pending change, then demand instantaneous 'satisfaction' of their every desire, apparently devoid of any recognition of limitations imposed by new versions of software.  (The iTrader thing being a good example where people were warned, well in advance, to get a 'snapshot' of their iTrader ranking and post it so that it could be preserved.  Now, all of a sudden, it's. . . "Where's our iTrader rating?  No more iTrader?  What are we going to do?")

As I've pointed out over there, real problems should be reported; e.g., error messages, access problems, etc.  Grumbling is expected over changes such as the size of the font, the background colors, etc.  But, simply complaining about things which can and are easily 'fixed' or 'mitigated' if you spend a modicum of time with the new infrastructure or complaints simply because things have 'changed' gets real old, real quick.  There are even those who have posted that Calguns is now 'dead' and point to alternative sites they think are 'better.'  Why?  You don't like it here, don't let the door hit you in the fanny on the way out.

After all the cries to 'fix it' or 'update it' or similar, you'd think a certain. . . gratitude. . . would be shown that something was done on that score.  Even if some of the things are not to your liking, some other things are actually 'improvements.'  You take the good with the bad, the better with the worse, and the rest you simply adapt to.  Fortunately, many are doing just that.  Yet, it is the incessant 'howling' that chaps my hide, particularly from those who couldn't even be bothered to sign in over here during the hiatus to keep up with what was going on or acknowledgement of the 'limitations' which have been imposed by various factors.  What sticks in my craw are those who come across as almost 'encouraging' it, I guess in an attempt to encourage them to 'get it out of their systems.'  Such just comes across more as 'pot stirring' than 'solution seeking.'

But, that's why I said that if Kestryll can 'survive' the whining and complaining, without serving noshes to those who 'demand' their aesthetics be catered to without recognition that they haven't even had a chance, yet, to actually see what's there. . . well. . .

That is my larger point.  Let's give it a chance and give Kestryll, et al. an opportunity to iron out the kinks before 'demanding' a 'fix for the fix.'  In the mean time, give recognition where recognition is due in terms of the effort which has been put forth.

Off Topic Discussion / Where's This, Why That On The Updated Site
« on: April 30, 2024, 04:28:11 AM »
It's amusing to watch.

People who didn't bother to come to this site during the transition and, evidently, didn't do all that much on the .net site in terms of using the features are now screaming about things.

As a number of us have already pointed out, some of the features they think are 'new' are actually long-time features, just more noticeable with the new format.

I have to admit, it's taking some time to sort through the new formatting in terms of how everything works and some of the new 'features' in terms of visibility are a little irritating; but, if you take some time to work through it, it's not rocket science.  Well. . . at least for the most part.

Once the technical kinks are smoothed out, it's still going to take a little getting used to, although some of the new functionalities are 'good.'

We'll see.

I can empathize.

My Grandparents had five kids and one bathroom.  At least they also had an outhouse; though, when the snow was deep and it was in the negative numbers Fahrenheit, it wasn't all that attractive an option.   :o

Yikes (to the cold). I cannot survive in that weather.

Is this the grandma that would bake a lot sometimes?

Once you become acclimated to the cold, it's not so bad.  Well, until you get older.  Then acclimation only goes so far.

Yep.  A lot of pies. . . among other things.

I love this. I only have four kids and have two toilets, which is rough enough!. . .
