How well did it work for you? Did it remove any of the cartouche?

I left my Finn M39 out in the sun at home today - The heat is supposed to help extract some of the grease/oil that's impregnated in the stock -

Put it in a black trash bag and leave it in the back window of your car.
Leave all the windows up.
Park the car in direct sunlight.

I've used my heat gun thru a thin towel....

I've done probably a dozen or so stocks like that.....

-if you are just looking to remove some saturated oil/cosmo and/or surface grime: clean lightly with a very soft detergent mix and then apply light but consistent heat, a rag to soak it up will do fine. The oil will just sweat out of the wood. Will not remove any cartouches unless you rapidly warp the wood (won't be an issue)

-if you're planning a refinish. Use a degreaser (simple green, white lightning, oven-off) to remove the dirt and then throw it in the dishwasher or oven for a bit. This will soften up and "blur" most woods, then you can sand and finish accordingly....

Good Evening.

You ever watch the Alfred Hitchcock shows a long time ago, when he says "Good Evening"

You sure there is not a coat of varnish on it? That would seal in anything that is underneath.

It's laden with grease and oil - It's dark all over the wood - The part of the stock that is in good condition shows nice grain and no varnish is on it -

ahh lol I thought you were trying to get the grease off the metal parts
I would avoid degreaser then
it will suck the oils right out of the wood
simple green would probably work pretty well though
