So its true?

I was smacking my router around, thinking it was a local issue. Then I thought to try some other sites.

Yes, I do this all day at work so my troubleshooting skills should be better, but I am getting older and forgetful.  :P

Traces are dying at 72.52.92.73, wherever that is.

EDIT> It looks to be a 10gig core router located in Fremont, CA operated by Hurricane Electric. it is passing packets, but they are being blocked at the next hop.

Yeah, you're going to have to create a new account here if you've never signed up here.
The databases are not connected, if they were this site would be down too.
In fact this site is on a different host company entirely

So this is a fun situation, I can not access the control panel to log a trouble ticket and the host site is down so emails can't get through to them either.
On the plus side the owner of the company is a Calgunner and I have his cell number.  ;)

As of right now the info I have is that it is a major cascade hardware failure and they are trying to determine how many things failed at the same time.
It's not just us or anything malicious that we're aware of and they are working on it as we speak.

Oh, man...I was going to buy a bottle when I was at Walmart this afternoon. I was feeling the need to pop the cork and start taking shots in the store due to the unbelievable behavior of some of the people there.

I decided not to, but now I wish I would have. It was a premonition, I'm telling ya.

What's the Randall story?...

Nothing special, he'd gotten a bit snarky lately and then insulted another member and got a time out.
No big deal.

Well, I guess he really isn't missing much at this point.  ;D

So, he didn't do anything unusual or out of character? That's a relief. He is an asset to the forums even if he crosses the line once in a while.

Apparently it's not just the site, I can't get Geovario to load either.

Hey............He is still alive. I feared that maybe something happened to our home and our fearless leader.

It appears he was at the Dueling tree shoot and I didn't even recognize him. I also didn't see the famous truck. Maybe I was too focused on trying to knock as many people out of the game as possible. It must have been the camo (he had hair this time) and tan shirt and pants. I would have said hi.

At least I can get my calguns fix here!

Still not up however it's still being worked on, history has shown that the staff at GeoVario will keep on it until we're back up.
Once things are back up and running I should be able to get an idea of exactly what happened, what died and what had to be replaced.
I'm not pressing for details right now so as not to slow down the repairs but when I hear something I'll let you know.

Professional Edge / GeoVario Hosting, OFFLINE

Unfortunately as you are seeing this page, you have come during the time of the worst hardware failure in our company's history.

The website you are expecting, or the email account you were trying to reach went offline at roughly 4:45pm PST 11/23/2015; after we experienced a cascade hardware problem that affected our Storage Area Network disk arrays.

At this time, all static files, email accounts and most of our web and application servers are offline, database servers were not affected, but without application and web servers the content is not reachable - we are actively working to restore service, however between expiditing replacement parts and time to restore from backups we are expecting services to restore by roughly 6am PST, November 26th.

We are very aware this has been a huge problem for everyone, we apologize greatly and continue to work to restore service as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,
Professional Edge LLC

A few questions that I know nobody here can answer:

-Why did they not have redundant hardware in place? No self-respecting computer company doesn't have a plan (and spare hardware) in place to prevent a hardware failure from taking out company operations. "they are trying to expedite replacement parts"... in other words, they only had 1 of whatever broke.

-If the storage disk array is what blew up, and they are "working to restore from backups", does that mean we lose hours, days, weeks, or months of data?

-Which IT guy there is getting canned?

I fully understand that hardware failures happen, I've experienced lots of them myself... but anyone who halfway knows what they're doing, would never experience a catastrophic hardware failure like this. Redundant systems should be in place, where one a hardware bank goes offline, catches fire, or whatever, the system kicks itself over to the redundant hardware and operations continue. Google, Amazon, Facebook, and many others never experience downtime, and I'm pretty sure it isn't because their hardware never fails.

Maybe time for CG to switch hosts?

First, does anyone have an estimated time when .net will be back up?
Although I do not know just how it works, when I tried to do a DNS lookup on Calguns.net it could not return a numeric IP address.  So it appears to me the the problem is more than just the servers that Calguns.net runs on and extends to DNS servers.  Anyone know more?

I just checked ODOT (Oregon Dept of Transportation) and the site is down. My mom lives in Bend and I was thinking about going up there, I can check road conditions in real time. This outage may being affecting .gov sites and that would not be good...

I was smacking my router around, thinking it was a local issue. Then I thought to try some other sites.

Yes, I do this all day at work so my troubleshooting skills should be better, but I am getting older and forgetful.  :P

LoL Me too

rebooted modem ,router released IP , checked settings , ran virus scan..

I'm with you.  Problems and their consequences are often not entirely avoidable.  But you can mitigate outages by preparing (and spending money) for outages.

Assuming they're using a SAN from a vendor like NetApp, IBM, EMC, or Hitachi, they should have a support contract.  FFS, when just a disk dies on one of my SANs, the vendor is willing to send a warm body to swap the SOB.  And a good support contract also means parts are on the way before you even have to ask.  If it really hit the fan, there would be a team of people driving gear to one of my facilities, pulling it out of labs at their corporate HQ, or otherwise doing whatever they had to for a return to service.

With the nature of the outage (customer data, but also their DNS servers appear to be offline, and thus no mailhost/MX records), it looks like they stored everything on the SAN (bad move #1), had no secondary site (bad move #2), have no disaster recovery (DR) plan (stupid stupid move #1), and basically put zero thought into recovering from a worst-case scenario.

I'd still put $5 on "everything lives in virtual machines and every virtual machine lives on one SAN".  Derp.

I'd agree that nearly everything is probably running from VM and shared storage. But they alluded to a cascade hardware failure and also having to do restores.  It could be their chassis cooling failed, causing several disks to die off - more than the RAID level they use could tolerate, necessitating a complete restore after they get equipment spares. It could have been the data center cooling too.  I'm just spitballing based on the limited info we have.  If it was just a SAN switch, a restore would not be required.

I am a believer in your own DNS being hosted by a 3rd party.  At least that way when things go tango uniform in your data center, you can quickly point A records at a backup site to at least give clients status updates. This is a lot faster than updating your DNS servers at the registrar and waiting for propagation, just to give status updates or receive mail.  It also allows you to have a lower priority MX record always published and pointing at a backup store & forward mail service, to be used when you have problems like this.

They should also revive their twitter account, it is a great way to give status updates.

I have some new information, and it's pretty much a case of a series of unfortunate events.

A little background; data is stored on mirrored disks which are then mirrored to another pair which in turn are mirrored to another pair and so on. In addition there are several backup disks which come in to play should one of the main disks fail.
And boy did it fail.

Apparently disc 2 of the primary pair failed so the server called up backup drive A and started rebuilding the mirror with drive 1 and drive A.
At the completion of the rebuild drive 1 failed. Drive A, now the primary drive of the primary pair, called up backup drive B and started rebuilding the mirror.
Midway through the second rebuild drive A failed taking out the primary mirrored pair.

Somewhere in this process one of the controller boards died as well.

Some of you may be wondering why there was no alert of a predictive failure, good question.
Apparently the data center failed to do a firmware update some time back that would have sent the predictive failure alert for all three drive so there was no notice given until things started dying.

FedEx should be delivering the new hardware as I am typing this if they haven't already and it will all be installed as quickly as possible.
The real delay comes from restoring the terabytes of data from tape which takes hours and hours.

As I said, a series of unfortunate events but they are working on it as quickly as they can.

Sorry to hear that Kest,

Might be looking at different choices for the future, so I would just mention this.
Primary disks (active) (mirrored fine)
Second set of disks with full software load and blank database (located in skeleton secondary running somewhere else home...different provider.)
Backup schedule Monday (to onsite backup location or second pair of disks), Tuesday ( Main active to backing up to online storage or to your home second set of backup disks backing up online), Wednesday (Both), Thursday, Friday, Saturday repeat, Sunday who cares as nobody worthy posts that day anyway :)

If Hosting goes down and not able to logon or respond, I get it. No ability to re-route DNS info so that needs a fix), because as I understand you to be a techie, if you could have re-routed, you likely had a second location with a temporary solution....ie .org server/database.

You got hosed and anyone in tech has been there. I'm sorry it happened. But there's little to no reason that you should have not had the hosting company provide access to the edge server at minimum to change DNS direction. Good luck and oh I'd like to offer up Stilly to help out......

Firmware being upgrade for alerts to be sent sounds odd. Why didn't they implement monitoring scripts that sends alerts when a drive drops from the raid? Seems they are making bs excuses to what happened. I bet a drive dropped from the raid it never got replace, and now that two drives from the array died the whole system went poof!

That was my thought too, it doesn't sound like an unfortunate series of coincidences, it sounds like they weren't diligent and are now paying the price. Coming up with excuses that are extremely unlikely, but we can't prove it didn't happen, to try to save face and not sound incompetent. Did they not realize that their system was incapable of warning them that a drive failure was detected? Does that mean that, until now, they've never head a drive failure? Heck, my server at work only has 4 disks, and I have to replace a dead one at least once every 2 years. And guess what, I even get an email when one goes bad  8)

I've known Michael the owner of PE/GV for over a decade, he has at one point donated two years of hosting free back when Calguns was small and needed time to grow. He's been a Calgunner for most of the time Calguns has existed and has helped dozens of Calgunners and 2A orgs get web stores and sites off the ground.

Nobody has to come up with excuses, for over ten years I've gotten straight answers whenever I've had a problem.

I don't care how unlikely it is I don't need them to prove jack squat because I've never been given a reason to mistrust Michael or PE/GV.
I have been given many reasons to trust them over the last decade so when I get a call from my friend and owner of the hosting company to tell me 'This is what happened' I believe him that that is what happened.

Calguns DNS is hosted at the provider who is down. DNS records are cached according to a TTL value that is provided with each record. However some recursive DNS servers (like your ISP provides) ignore these values and cache according to their own timers.  In any case, the provider itself (ProfEdge) also hosts its own DNS. So lookups cannot be done, because recursive DNS servers (like the Google 8.8.8.8 server for example) can't even reach PROFEDGE to get IPs for their DNS servers, to then query them for CALGUNS hostnames.

But it doesn't much matter, because the info we have about the failure says that even if we could resolve an IP for host www.calguns.net, the web application server which front ends the database is down.

I don't care how unlikely it is I don't need them to prove jack squat because I've never been given a reason to mistrust Michael or PE/GV.

I agree - sometimes s*it just happens. It sucks when it does, but I don't care if you are big or small, this kind of thing can bite anybody.  Now everyone go clean some guns or turkeys, maybe put some lead downrange, and let the geeks do what they do to get the train back on the rails.

The temp. Calguns.org page is such a joke in the market place. Nothing but BS threads being posted!!! Nothing is being taken serious and needs to regulated seriously with a moderator if that's going to be up and running until this gets situated!!!

Here's another:

So, either the forum goes down so much that you need a backup, or the creators of the forum are so arrogant that they feel like no one can survive without their forums. Which one is it?

I'll admit, im in CGN withdrawal - LOL - but those ^^^ fellas are literally dying.  ;D I can't help but laugh at their misfortune and realize I should just check back in 36 hours.

If it's down, it's down. I'm sure the powers that be are working hard to get a fix. NBD.

Thanks for the update. To cockedandglocked and kapache, This failure is not a typical situation IMO. In addition, I would bet that Calguns along with it's hosting services don't have the resources that Google, Microsoft, and other huge datacenters have. It's very unfortunate that this type of failure happened to what it sounds like more than 4 Hardrives at once or (four mirrors). If Kestryll wants to start a fundraiser to support more hardware for more redundancy, I certainly don't mind contributing.  :)

Sounds like someone put BOTH ends of a ethernet cable into the same switch!!

I understand, but I'm just curious what's wrong with using a giant company like, say, GoDaddy to host CG? I know this guy is Kes's friend and a longtime supporter of CG, but sometimes business is business.

I may really love an ammo company, and the owner might be a really good friend, honest, and always been there for me for year and years, but when one of his cartridges blows up my rifle and I lose 2 fingers, I'll probably go find a new company. Just sayin'.

Not that I'm comparing CG being down for a couple days to losing an appendage (though for some I'm sure it seems just as bad or worse)  ;D

Computer Engineer here, I agree 100%!

They are more than likely running Calguns.net on a virtual machine (on a hardware server with other clients virtuals) in a datacenter.

They should have had all the virtual machines on another set of "hardware machines" in a DIFFERENT data center on the East Coast so that the other "cluster" takes over if ANYTHING fails!

FOR PETE SAKE, THIS IS CALGUNS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT!! : )

Perhaps its all a PM problem?  Not swapping out drives at the end of their useful lives?  I know 1 thing, all the drives being replaced now will fail at roughly the same time in the future.  They should be replaced before they "get an e mail from the server"  in some sort of staggered way.

Folks:
To all the armchair IT gurus, Kestryll and the hosting provider don't have much experience in this field and can really use your help.  Please put all of your suggestions in writing on the back of $100 bills.  If one bill is not enough for your ideas, please use multiple bills and mail them all to him for review, evaluation, and consideration.
Until then, put the smartphone/tablet/laptop down, go outside your mom's basement, enjoy a breath of fresh air, clean your guns, go out for a walk, maybe go out to the range...

  • Moms Demand Don't Stop
  • bacon

It was Senator Leland Yee!!! He took Calguns down as revenge for them not coming to his aid regarding his second amendment rights to buy and sell firearms in California

I think it was Jim Mitchell, the owner of Oaktree. ;)

Technically you're correct. But how much more money does it take to support that 24/7 365 days a year?

I have no idea how much CG pays for their hosting now, nor what their bandwidth requirements are, but GoDaddy offers a dedicated hardware server for $209/mo, plus $4.99/mo for daily automatic backups:

32 GB RAM
Storage: 2 TB
Bandwidth: 20 TB/mo

Cheaper plans are available if the requirements are less.

https://www.godaddy.com/servers (https://www.godaddy.com/servers)

I'm sure there are many similar options out there from other company's as well, that's just the first one that came to mind.
2TB and 20TB/Month?

That's not even close to what's needed for Calguns.
Remember, there are a LOT of attachments, and the bandwidth for 10,000 users.

That Godaddy server with Calguns on it would run worse than CalCCW

I manage 7 recording servers with 24TB each (Raid6) at my traffic management center.

And I just sent Kest three $100 bills, but forgot to write my recommendation on them :D

20TB divided by 1 million monthly website visits (http://www.trafficestimate.com/calguns.net (http://www.trafficestimate.com/calguns.net)) is 20MB of available bandwidth per visit. I don't think that that would be exceeded, since the bulk of the images (avatars) are cached locally on our machines after the first download. I'm not sure how many photos are in their database, but if each one is 200KB, that's enough space for 10 million photos. The database of posts and PM's is likely <20GB, but even if I'm underestimating that by 1000%, it's still only 10% of the total available storage. All the text of Wikipedia is only 12GB, so I think my estimate of 20GB of posts in calguns if probably not an underestimate.

The above is pure speculation of course, but I don't think I'm that far off.

Also, I'm not necessarily recommending GoDaddy specifically, I was just giving the first example that popped into my head. I'm sure there are thousands of better options out there for similar pricing.

This should help lighten the mood:

Jacques Chirac, The French Prime Minister, was sitting in his office wondering what kind of mischief he could perpetrate against the United States when his telephone rang.

"Hallo, Mr. Chirac!", a heavily accented voice said. "This is Paddy down at the Harp Pub in County Sligo, Ireland.

I am ringing to inform you that we are officially declaring war on you!"

"Well, Paddy," Chirac replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?"

"Right now," said Paddy, after a moment's calculation, "there is myself, me cousin Sean,

me next door neighbor Seamus, and the entire dart team from the pub. That makes eight!"

Chirac paused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have one hundred thousand men in my army waiting to move on my command."

"Begorra!" said Paddy. "I'll have to ring you back!"

Sure enough, the next day, Paddy called again. "Mr. Chirac, the war is still on. We have managed to get us some infantry equipment!"

"And what equipment would that be, Paddy?" Chirac asked. "Well, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Murphy's farm tractor."

Chirac sighed, amused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 6,000 tanks and 5,000 armored personnel carriers.

Also, I've increased my army to one hundred fifty thousand since we last spoke."

"Saints preserve us!" said Paddy. "I'll have to get back to you."

Sure enough, Paddy rang again the next day. "Mr. Chirac, the war is still on!" We have managed to get ourselves airborne!

We've modified Jackie McLaughlin's ultra-light with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the Shamrock Pub have joined us as well!"

Chirac was silent for a minute and then cleared his throat. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 100 bombers and 200 fighter planes.

My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites.

And since we last spoke, I've increased my army to two hundred thousand!"

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!", said Paddy, "I'll have to ring you back."

Sure enough, Paddy called again the next day. "Top o' the mornin', Mr. Chirac! I am sorry to tell you that we have had to call off the war."

"I'm sorry to hear that," said Chirac. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

"Well," said Paddy, "we've all had a long chat over a bunch of pints, and decided there's no foo-kin way we can feed two hundred thousand prisoners.

Doc, says Steve, I want to be castrated.

What on earth for? asks the doctor in amazement.

It's something I've been thinking about for a long time and I want to have it done replies Steve.

But have you thought it through properly? asks the doctor, It's a very serious operation and once it's done, there's no going back.

It will change your life forever!

I'm aware of that and you're not going to change my mind -- either you book me in to be castrated or I'll simply go to another doctor.

Well, OK. says the doctor, But it's against my better judgment!

So Steve has his operation, and the next day he is up and walking very slowly, legs apart, down the hospital corridor with his drip stand.

Heading towards him is another patient, who is walking exactly the same way.

Hi there, says Steve, It looks as if you've just had the same operation as me.

Well, said the patient, I finally decided after 37 years of life that I would like to be circumcised.

Steve stared at him in horror and screamed, "DAMN! THAT'S the word!

For all the local "operators":

LETTER FROM A FARM KID,

(NOW AT San Diego MARINE CORPS

RECRUIT TRAINING.)

Dear Ma and Pa,

I am well Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a

mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 A.M. but I am getting so I like to sleep late.

Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch,

mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water.

Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham,

steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee.

Their food plus yours holds you till noon when you get fed again.

It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches," which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us.

If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice but awful flat. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why.

The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home.

All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real

careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home.

I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake I only beat him once.

He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry.

Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,
Carol

A Captain in the foreign legion was transferred to a desert post. On his orientation tour he noticed a very old,
seedy looking camel tied out back of the enlisted men's barracks. He asked the Sergeant leading the tour,
"What's the camel for?" The Sergeant replied, "Well sir, it's a long way from anywhere,
and the men have natural --- urges, so when they do, we have the camel."
The Captain said "Well, if it's good for morale, then I guess it's all right with me."
After he had been at the fort for about 6 months, the Captain could not stand it anymore,
so he told his Sergeant, "BRING IN THE CAMEL!!!"The Sarge shrugged his shoulders and led the camel into the Captain's quarters.
The Captain got a foot stool and proceeded to have vigorous --- with the camel.
As he stepped, satisfied, down from the stool and was buttoning his pants he asked the sergeant,
"Is that how the enlisted men do it?" The Sergeant replied, "Well sir, they usually just use it to ride into town."

A husband and wife love to golf together, but neither of them are playing like they want to, so they decide to take private lessons.
The husband has his lesson first. After the pro sees his swing, he says, "No, no, no, you're gripping the club way too hard!"
"Well, what should I do?" asks the man. "Hold the club gently," the pro replied, "just like you'd hold your wife's ---."
The man takes the advice, takes a swing, and WOW! He hits the ball 250 yds. Straight up the fairway.
The man goes back to his wife with the good news, and the wife can't wait for her lesson.
The next day the wife goes for her lesson. The pro watches her swing and says, "No, no, no, you're gripping the club way too hard."
"What can I do?" asks the wife."Hold the club gently, just like you'd hold your husband's ---."
The wife listens carefully to the pro's advice, takes a swing, and THUMP. The ball goes straight down the fairway . . . about 15 ft.
"That was great," the pro says. "Now, take the club out of your mouth and swing the club like you're supposed to!" says the pro.

10+ year member... I never come over here as it looks like a scary clown website from 2001 and I have visual issues looking at the bubble gum colors.

But seriously, when the outage went on for hours and then a day, I figured something technology related must have melted down. And then day 2 came and that is when I went searching for answers and... damn! I did not think it would be this serious.

This is really cutting into my Sales & Deals shopping - but maybe saving me money then.

Now I will be hanging out here to see how this resolves.

You get the idea...

A married couple was having a quiet dinner out when a statuesque blonde walked by their table and winked at the husband.
"Who was that?" the wife demanded.
"Well, if you must know," the husband replied, "that was my mistress."
"Your mistress!? You bastard! I want a divorce!" the wife screamed.
Looking directly into her eyes, her husband calmly replied, "Are you saying you want to give up our big house in the suburbs,
your Mercedes, your furs, your maid, your jewelry, and our vacation home in Mexico?"
For a long time they continued dining in silence.
Finally, the woman cleared her throat and said, "Isn't that your boss Howard over there? Who's he with?"
"That's HIS mistress," her husband said. "Hmmmph." she said, taking another bite of dessert. "Ours is much cuter."

There are three Labradors retrievers sitting in the waiting room at the vet's.
A black lab, a brown lab and a yellow lab.
The black lab turns to the brown lab and says, "Why are you here?" The brown lab says,
"I'm a pisser. I piss on everything. I pissed on my owners sofa, their carpets, their drapes,
but the last straw was when I pissed in the middle of their bed."
The black lab says,"What is the vet going to do to you?"
And the brown lab says, sadly, "Lethal injection."
Then the brown lab asks the black, "Why are you here?"
The black lab says, "I'm a digger. I dig under fences, I dig up the flowers, the bushes.
When I'm inside, I dig up the carpets but the last straw was when I dug a big hole in my owner's sofa."
The brown lab says, "What's the vet going to do to you?" And the black lab says sadly, "Lethal injection."
Then the black and brown labs turn to the yellow lab and ask, "Why are you here?"
The yellow lab says, "I'm a humper. I'll hump anything. I'll hump the cat, the dining room table, a fire hydrant.
Whatever I see, I want to hump. Why, last week, my owner had taken a shower and was drying her toes and I couldn't help it,
I just hopped on her back and humped her."
The black lab says,"So you're here for a lethal injection, too?"
"No, I'm getting my nails clipped."

HA!

What's the latest news? Any updates?

If I remember correctly, something about 8am tomorrow it should be back up... something about having to order replacement hardware and waiting for it to arrive.

geez... missed a day from this thread and - a bunch of stuff to weed through for meaningful update...

a locked thread with periodic updates would be helpful  ;)

In the mean time, I get it - down for a couple days... I'm pretty sure I was one of the first ones to say:
seems like this might be a long one  :(

Glad I'm not the only one...

There is a bright side to this outage, 2 actually,

1) the Chinese and Russian spammers may move on thinking the site is gone permanently.

2) all the money we have saved by not buying stuff at the "sales"

-1) I am sure we bankrupt a company or 2 that was expecting our buying power to balance their end of year books

Restore backup from tape? Vas is dis "tape" you speak of? Tape?

I checked this out, apparently, some sort of "tape" was used in ancient times...the '80's where a kind of magnetized tape was used for information storage. Quite heathan by today's standards. Tape? Really?

UPDATES: 2:00pm PST 11/25/2015 - all failed hardware has been replaced and all logical data has finished restore process. NameServer (DNS) services are restored. As name servers were needed for the WebSites that were not affected, some sites are back online, however all email is still OFFLINE.

CRITICAL!!!: 6:48pm PST 11/25/2015 - a time drift/snapshot bug in the various backups has made full recovery impossible. We highly suggest if you are using an email client such as Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.. that you use the "Local Folders", "Personal Folders", etc.. to make a copy of any EMAIL in your IMAP inbox. A large number of existing emails in the IMAP inboxes have been affected by the outage, and as email is not something that we do daily backups of - we can not restore any email in your inbox. Please create a "Local or Personal Folder" and drag and drop all email from your IMAP inbox into a local folder stored on your machine. NOTE if you use POP3 you should already be storing data locally on your machine, and no action is required.

UPDATES: 11:30pm PST 11/25/2015 - integrity checks of the restored storage snapshots are still running, and still finding lots of errors due to the time drift of the snapshots. We suggest you locate copies of the static files (pictures, app software, etc) as you may need to re-upload some content to the webservers. Again - the database servers are not affected at all - so all posts, messages, purchase history, etc.. are not affected, but the forum software, or uploaded images may be affected - we'll know more once the integrity checks finish.

UPDATES: 4:00am PST 11/26/2016 - integrity checks finished - which ended up producing more questions as to how we arrived where we are; in short we have unusable backups, lots of filesystem corruption, and now sets of servers that even though they can now access working hardware refused to run at speeds faster than a computer from the late 1960s . As we have already been planning the next phase of our services to be built using Amazon AWS Cloud Servers, we have spun up several servers there and are moving critical services there as quickly as possible. We hate to say it - but you likely won't have your website back in the next 2 hours - unless you already have your site back now. Next update will be at 12 noon PST.

Sincerely,
Professional Edge LLC

26/2016 - 12:16pm PST - Update6: The time drift/snapshot bug in various backups as mentioned has resulted in all backups for the affected webservers and email servers to be completely useless. Further the fully restored hardware while functioning correctly is running gruesomely slow at the Hypervisor (Virtualization) layer - causing the restored servers to run so slowly they timeout before serving a single webpage or a single email. We are copying all Email Data to our newly provisioned AWS Cloud Servers - we will locate a DNS server there as well, to make sure that DNS has no further outages. At this time about 40% of the email data is transfered to AWS - and plan to bring email services back online by around 6pm PST.

Next Update at 4pm PST

so, cascading hardware failure, some firmware that wasn't updated, so they werent notified of the impending doom, and completely unusable backups due to bugs.
Erg. Not my circus, not my monkeys, thank God.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How exactly does a "bug" cause backups to become useless? Did the bug walk across the room, open the closet door, and eat the backup tapes?

I stand by my previous comments that this host is completely inept. Time to find a new one, in my opinion, even if the guy is Kes's friend. This is 2015, this sort of failure is not acceptable. It sounds like the forum might be starting from scratch. Let me put it this way... If you had the only copy of all your family photos stored at your friend's house, and they all got lost in a house fire because your friend left the stove on when he went on vacation, would you keep storing your new photos at his house after he rebuilds it?

Calm down, we are NOT starting from scratch.

The database server which has all the settings, posts, PMs and such is fine.
Our database is intact.

Worst case scernario is I have to reload the vBulletin software and reconnect it to the database.
If we lose anything it would be some images stored as attachments.

There is no question in my mind that this problem was brewing for possibly several weeks. Meaning at least one drive was failing somewhat and according to what I remember reading considering the heat issues, it was just a matter of time unfortunately. Certainly not blaming anyone. Just very unfortunate. I noticed the site being slow for at least one week prior to the crash. It could have been coincidental.

It was the job of the hosting company to make sure things like this don't happen. System failures this massive do not happen suddenly overnight, there has to have been some chain of events. My experiences with NOCs, it usually points to failure of the system managers to monitor the health of the system. Most NOCs only monitor basic functionality and do not get into the hardware as much. Personally I would never trust this hosting service again and for this hosting service, they need to make some real changes to how they monitor the site. Going over the AWS would eliminate most of their issues but makes them dependent on AWS.

I am not an IT guy, but as a commercial hvac tech I have experiance with data center, nod/relay stations, and cell towers.  Since this was a massive failure of the equipment, rather than a lack of maintenance, I think it was a failure of cooling equipment and failed temperature alarms. That would explain such a widespread failure.

We had a drive failure where I work (a school district) nearly a year ago, over the Christmas break. A similar situation, with a failed drive in the SAN. It was rebuilding onto a hot spare as the vendor overnighted a replacement drive.

Of course, during the holidays, overnight shipping does not necessarily equate to 'overnight'. When the replacement drive arrived two days later, the rebuild had already failed due to another drive failure, this time the parity drive for the original failed pair.

By the time the second replacement arrived and the discrepancy between our holiday schedules and the vendor's, the task of restoring the hardware and the data took a little over two weeks.

Of course, we are a minor value customer, with only 17 or 18 VM servers running on the SAN. I am sure larger customers receive better service.

Where I work we have a contract with the SAN vendor. When a drive fails it sends us an email, but it also send a message back to the vendor. A disk shows up within four hours, sometimes I've found out there was a failed drive because a delivery guy was knocking on the window at 6AM. Then I check my email and see the message.

11/27/2015 - 7:53pm PST - Update 14: Email is flowing in, the next set of challenges are the vast majority of your WebSites that previously were multi-server clusters routed behind software load-balancers - well the software load-balancers are a mess that's taken us over 20 hours trying to get working, we are giving up. We are instead reconfiguring all websites to run in Single IP mode - the majority of websites should be online by around midnight tonight

MOST have a problem you can find after clicking on a few pages, and SOME just don't work at all because they use Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc.. which needs all the base software files working (i.e. when you see a Server 500 Error page, go click on the Web-Options button and then click on the Error_Log for the domain - and voilla you'll see something like the ".htacess" file is corrupted or the index.php is missing, or the backup folder is missing, etc..) - for this last class of website error that is giving an Error 500 - just reupload the same software files you did before and your website will return. Or open a ticket and tell us what software you need installed and we'll do it for you.

Can someone get this over to GeoVario - maybe can use some reference info and get a handle on things  :o

From: http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E500.html

HTTP Error 500 Internal server error

Introduction

The Web server (running the Web Site) encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request by the client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) for access to the requested URL.

This is a 'catch-all' error generated by the Web server. Basically something has gone wrong, but the server can not be more specific about the error condition in its response to the client. In addition to the 500 error notified back to the client, the Web server should generate some kind of internal error log which gives more details of what went wrong. It is up to the operators of the Web server site to locate and analyse these logs. (Last updated: October 2013)

Fixing 500 errors - general

This error can only be resolved by fixes to the Web server software. It is not a client-side problem. It is up to the operators of the Web server site to locate and analyse the logs which should give further information about the error.

Fixing 500 errors - CheckUpDown

Our service monitors your site for HTTP errors like 500. Please contact us (email preferred) whenever you encounter 500 errors on your CheckUpDown account. We then have to liaise with your ISP and the vendor of the Web server software so they can trace the exact reason for the error. Correcting the error may require recoding program logic for the Web server software, which could take some time.

Librarian,

The Error 500 translation, along with the narrative explanation of the sleepless web hoster, seem to indicate that the website backbone is now operational and that the individual websites must now reload their software to restore function to the sites.

That makes it seem that the proverbial ball is now in Calguns court to make the site work.

Am I missing something here?

No, I'm not an addict or anything like that...............

That depends. If Calguns has a backup of their data, it shouldn't be an issue even if Geovario's backup of the data was toasted which if I remember correctly, Kestryll already mentioned that all the data was intact.

Getting the custom settings back in place is a bit more 'fun' but can be done.
The real trick is going to be remembering what all I did! ;)

I can access the control panel and web server files now but before I start poking around under the hood I'm going to send a text to GV/PE to make sure anything I might do won't mess up any restorations in progress.

We are in route to being back home.

We're not starting over, th database which has all the posts, PMs, settings and such was never damaged and is intact.

If the database is intact, why couldn't the post counts be restored?

I believe the post counts were mentioned by the ISP regarding email.  Not the forum message counts.

I think Kes should modify the DNS entry for .net to point to a "site temporarily unavailable" page on .org until he has the web site up and running.  When he is happy with .net he modifies the DNS to point back to .net home page.  This would cut down on messages here and activity on the site he is working on.  My 2 cents.

Ditto.
Many of my attachments are still there, many (more recent) are missing.

That's going to suck because many of those attachments came from my ISP personal web space and I haven't been able to FTP into that server for over a year... many of my files on that server were not backed up locally.

We're doing a database backup right now so it's going to give an error.
We're doing a full backup because while the forum is up we have a few files that are not responding so I'm going to upgrade from 3.8.7 to 3.8.9 and hope the update replaces any problematic files.

Any idea on how bad the damages to the attachment database will be?
Even if we identify each attachment and find a local file, we can't "reinsert" it into the database without editing every individual post, and that won't restore future posts that IMG linked to the same attachment.

I was halfway through my review of the Ulticlip and discovered it was down again when I tried to "go advanced" to add an attachment.
Luckily, I have Lazarus installed so I was able to recover what I had put in the "Quick Reply" window and copy it to the notepad.

Lazarus has been a lifesaver, both for short-term forum outages (like the 5-minute outage at midnight on Calguns, wish Kest would move that routine to 3am), or for when my freaking Verizon ActionLowTech router decides that the table is full and it needs to reboot.

By default vBulletin stores attachments in the database however as the forum gets larger database size becomes an issue and attachment storage has to be shifted over to the file server which we did.
The database is undamaged but the files on the server took some damage.
We're up and running but we're also still working to recover some files that were lost or damaged.

I am either getting long load times or "webpage not available".

I tried posting something in another thread several times and got the same thing after hitting reply. I thought none of those posts went through. I just now saw that I posted the same thing 4 times. I'll delete the dupes when I am able to access the delete feature, which I have already tried without success.

Now I'm getting "server error" when I try to post.
