2nd Amend. Politics and Law / Re: Questions about AR pistols
« on: November 28, 2015, 03:56:17 PM »
SSE has become more difficult, but is still possible.

PPT sales and Intrafamilial transfers are still roster-exempt, however, in the case of your father gifting one to you, it must be a legitimate gift.
You can not give him (or anyone else) the money to make the purchase or it becomes a Federal crime (Question 1 on the 4473).

Theoretically, the law has not changed on 80%, however, more recent reviews of the law call into question whether or not it was ever truly legal.
Without question, you CAN build an 80% break-top bolt-action single shot handgun.  The conversion to semi-auto is the issue, as there is no legal definition as to at what point "manufacturing" stops and "modification" begins.
It is and always has been illegal to "manufacture" an off-roster handgun.

Finally.... why?
Seriously.
The AR pistol is a fun little range toy, but it is totally impractical for any use other than "I found a way to have one when California says I can't"

It is not practical for home defense due to the high power round.
It is not practical for hunting due to the short sight radius and short barrel accuracy issues.
It is not practical for self defense due to the lack of concealability, as well as awkwardness of open carry when hunting/fishing.

Handguns / Re: CMP WILL get surplus 1911s

I suspect it will be very hard to get one. There's very few available and very high demand.
100,000 total, only 10,000 per year.

I posted on .net, got enough of a taste to be able to partially function, went and changed my oil, came back to get a little more to tide me over and IT'S DOWN AGAIN. :'( :'( :'( MAn, I'm starting withdrawals all over again. Hurry, hurry, hurry...........
I was halfway through my review of the Ulticlip and discovered it was down again when I tried to "go advanced" to add an attachment.
Luckily, I have Lazarus installed so I was able to recover what I had put in the "Quick Reply" window and copy it to the notepad.

Lazarus has been a lifesaver, both for short-term forum outages (like the 5-minute outage at midnight on Calguns, wish Kest would move that routine to 3am), or for when my freaking Verizon ActionLowTech router decides that the table is full and it needs to reboot.

You need 51 posts then [applaud] [smite] shoes up.

IMO, it has no function - we all get random +1 / -1 's. Mostly negs. Take it with a grain of salt.

.
On Thumpertalk it's "gas cans" and when you get enough negatives you run out of "gas"
When you run out of "gas" you are automatically temp-banned pending moderator review/reinstatement.

For the most part, it did nothing but create butthurt.

Announcements and Suggestions / Re: local IP
« on: November 28, 2015, 03:06:02 PM »
Unless your IP is 192.168.1.107 you've got nothing to worry about ;)

Seriously, the IP is displayed to you, not other users.
It IS logged into the message structure and is visible to Admin.
Every forum works that way.

That is one tool mods/admin use to detect banned users returning with a new ID.  Worst case, if the user continues to return, they can block the entire subnet.   That's last resort type thing because it ends up blocking all of the ISP's users on that same subnet.

7
So this is what it's like when Ivanimal swings the temporary ban hammer?

Has there been any information on the reason for the site loss? Is this sabotage or IT or infrastructure failure?
The IT equivalent of SHTF.

Most likely a datacenter cooling system failure... one of the few things that could cause so many simultaneous failures.

I have it on good authority Kes will email each and every member with a personalized message when the .net site is up and running.

But he bases the order of the notifications by karma counts.

Smited for truth.
So how many posts does it take to add karma?

'Don't Panic'

We're doing a database backup right now so it's going to give an error.
We're doing a full backup because while the forum is up we have a few files that are not responding so I'm going to upgrade from 3.8.7 to 3.8.9 and hope the update replaces any problematic files.
Any idea on how bad the damages to the attachment database will be?
Even if we identify each attachment and find a local file, we can't "reinsert" it into the database without editing every individual post, and that won't restore future posts that IMG linked to the same attachment.

12
1418: seems to be back intermittently - getting database errors just now.
Ditto.
Many of my attachments are still there, many (more recent) are missing.

That's going to suck because many of those attachments came from my ISP personal web space and I haven't been able to FTP into that server for over a year... many of my files on that server were not backed up locally.

We're not starting over, th database which has all the posts, PMs, settings and such was never damaged and is intact.

If the database is intact, why couldn't the post counts be restored?
That was a joke.

I added the last line to the quote and bolded it.
Given that Murphy has ruled this week, my post ended up at the top of the page :D

How many people work for GeoVario?  Based on the updates, it seems like it's just one.
Let's hope the lack of sleep doesn't cause them/him to make mistakes.
But he's an IT guy.
IT guys run on Red Bull and coffee.  They don't need sleep.  They are androids.

Handguns / Re: 1911 is better than Glock
« on: November 27, 2015, 11:25:30 PM »
My friend, everyone knows that glocks are the poormans semiautomatic pistol, and real men carry cold hard steel.  Don't fret my friend, one day your testicles will drop :)

I own cold hard steel pistols, and I still carry a Glock. Namely because I don't care if it gets holster wear and scratches, but also because they just... work. All the time. And no silly safeties to fudge around with.
And if the unthinkable happens, I'd rather have a $500-$600 Glock in the evidence locker for the next 2 years instead of a $1500+ 1911 that's special.

Excellent point. Someone had a thread in the .net forum about using his Grandpa's 1911 from like WWII as a HD gun, and others made the same point... do you really want it to be melted down by the PD if you ended up needing to use it?
Grandpa's 1903 is the only gun in my home that is not loaded and chambered 24/7.
There are two loaded mags with it, but my wife knows that if that gun is ever loaded and used, there had better be several bodies and a bunch of malfunctioned guns.

What happened to the 6 pm update?

11/27/2015 - 7:53pm PST - Update 14: Email is flowing in, the next set of challenges are the vast majority of your WebSites that previously were multi-server clusters routed behind software load-balancers - well the software load-balancers are a mess that's taken us over 20 hours trying to get working, we are giving up. We are instead reconfiguring all websites to run in Single IP mode - the majority of websites should be online by around midnight tonight, but all posts counts have been reset to zero
:o

 ;)

Didn't think to take any pictures.
Put a Glock 36 in jail at Riflegear last Friday after taking my wife to Roscoe's for fried chicken and waffles.

I guess we'll have to have chicken and waffles next Monday too.

Funny, my wife.
It's usually a fight to drag her out of bed before 11 due to her pain killers effing up her sleep patterns.

So last week, I'm thinking Riflegear on my Friday off.   So I text her before I leave work "Chicken and waffles tomorrow?"

I woke up at 7:30, she was out of bed and in the shower :D

Technically you're correct. But how much more money does it take to support that 24/7 365 days a year?

I have no idea how much CG pays for their hosting now, nor what their bandwidth requirements are, but GoDaddy offers a dedicated hardware server for $209/mo, plus $4.99/mo for daily automatic backups:

32 GB RAM
Storage: 2 TB
Bandwidth: 20 TB/mo

Cheaper plans are available if the requirements are less.

https://www.godaddy.com/servers

I'm sure there are many similar options out there from other company's as well, that's just the first one that came to mind.
2TB and 20TB/Month?

That's not even close to what's needed for Calguns.
Remember, there are a LOT of attachments, and the bandwidth for 10,000 users.

That Godaddy server with Calguns on it would run worse than CalCCW

I manage 7 recording servers with 24TB each (Raid6) at my traffic management center.

And I just sent Kest three $100 bills, but forgot to write my recommendation on them :D
