Title: Roster Question - S&W 686
Post by: fletched on November 25, 2015, 09:52:44 AM
First California Handgun purchase - Noob Question  :).

I'm sure this sort of thing is covered in detail on the main site.... my apologies...

I'm familiar with the concept of the list and model numbers.

Picked out the gun I want, ready to buy.

I go to the Roster website and find the following

Smith & Wesson revolvers currently on the roster with the letter 'A' after the product code, will be engraved with the letter 'A' on the underside of the top strap of the revolver.

I'm confused by this engraving business.

Assuming I buy online, Is the shop I transfer from stamping these?

This is the text from Roster site.

686-6 Plus 7 Shot SKU 164198A / Stainless Steel   Revolver   6"   .357 Magnum   1/1/2016

google search for "SKU 164198A" produces nothing...?

Thanks in advance.

I guess the alternative is finding one locally or having a shop order one?

Christmas present to myself...

I don't know the answer to  your question, but if it is not on the roster, there are shops that will convert it to single action to sell it exempt.

No the shop does not stamp the gun with the "A", it needs to come from S&W that way.  Could be hard to find out of state and getting a non "A" , having it converted via SAE, along with transfer fee, much better and cheaper to find one locally.

You will not be disappointed. Are you getting 4" or 6"? I like 6" for target, but if you plan on bolstering or hunting, a lot of folks prefer 4"

Im getting all these email notifications that ruger .22, S&W semis etc will no longer be sold in California. Are all the rest of the semis like glock be microstamped,  whats the last day until this law goes in to effect.

Thanks

Ask at calguns.net - this site is primarily a backup for that one.

Short answer: all guns on the Roster expire 1-January every year.

Guns ON the Roster may be renewed, without things like microstamping or other requirements that were not in effect when submitted to the DOJ.

Whether a particular model WILL BE renewed is a question for the manufacturer - but most will be renewed.
