California Gov. Gavin Newsom aired some bullshit over the July Fourth weekend, inviting Floridians to California for more "freedom."
"It's Independence Day," Newsom said in the ad, posted to his Twitter. "So let's talk about what's going on in America. Freedom is under attack in your state.
"Republican leaders," he continued, are "banning books, making it harder to vote, restricting speech in classrooms, even criminalizing women and doctors. I urge all of you living in Florida, to join the fight — or join us in California."
Newsom's choice of Florida as a focal point for cultural debate may not be an arbitrary one, as speculation looms that the Democratic governor is eyeing a presidential run in 2024. According to the New York Post, Newsom spent $105,000 for ad spots on Fox News in Florida to position himself as an alternative to popular Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican.
"Stay tuned," Newsom's spokesman Nathan Click told the SF Gate ahead of the airing.
Around the time of Click's comment, Ashley Zavala, who covers the California Capitol for Nexstar Media Group, pointed out that Newsom, "who said he has 'subzero interest' in running for President will reportedly air ads in a state …*checks notes* …2,700 miles away from his own."
The ad comes amid a clash of critiques Newsom waged against DeSantis on issues from COVID-19 policies to critical race theory in schools. But despite it all, the Florida governor, meanwhile, has delighted in the exodus of disaffected Californians bolting for Florida.
"Yes," DeSantis told Fox, "there's a lot of Californians who like what we're doing who are coming, but even the ones that posture against Florida typically find their way here."
DeSantis's press secretary, Christina Pushaw, referenced the ad buy, tweeting, "Californians... aren't you glad you pay 60% of your income in taxes to bankroll fun projects like this?"

A new dashboard from the California Attorney General’s office has leaked the personal information of thousands of the state’s gun owners.
The California Department of Justice launched its 2022 Firearms Dashboard Portal on Monday. The portal featured data on the state's gun purchases as well as concealed carry license holders.
Users quickly learned that publicly-accessible files – including identifying information of concealed carry permit owners – could be downloaded from the graphics, as The Reload reports. As of Tuesday afternoon, the dashboard appears to have been pulled from the website.
The leaked info included people’s full names, home addresses, dates of birth, and permit issue dates, as confirmed by a lawyer for the California Rifle and Pistol Association that obtained a copy of the data.
Some personal information of concealed carry license holders is available through a public records request.
Additionally, the data revealed the type of permit one holds and whether the person holding the permit is a judge or a member of law enforcement, the report found.
In Los Angeles County alone, 2,891 people with standard licenses had their information compromised by the leak, The Reload stated.
Initially, this information was available to download on the website by downloading the background information behind the graphics, but it had been updated by Tuesday morning so that any personal information was no longer public. As of the afternoon, the state's database site appeared entirely inactive.
California Rifle and Pistol Association President Chuck Michel was not happy with the leak and said that a lawsuit may be coming.
“Vindictive sore loser bureaucrats have endangered peoples lives and invited conflict by illegally releasing confidential private information,” Michel told The Center Square in a statement. “CRPA is working with several legislators and sheriffs to determine the extent of the damage caused by DOJ’s doxing of law abiding gun owners. Litigation is likely.”
Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office could not be immediately reached for comment on Tuesday.
Bonta’s office issued a press release on Monday in announcing the dashboard feature.
“Transparency is key to increasing public trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve,” Attorney General Bonta said in the press release. “As news of tragic mass shootings continue to dominate the news cycle, leaving many with feelings of fear and uncertainty, we must do everything we can to prevent gun violence. One of my continued priorities is to better provide information needed to help advance efforts that strengthen California’s commonsense gun laws.
“Today’s announcement puts power and information into the hands of our communities by helping them better understand the role and potential dangers of firearms within our state.”
Two?Definitely NOT pointLESS!
California Gov. Gavin Newscum on Friday appointed Andi Mudryk as the state’s second openly transgender judge, and the first to be appointed by the governor.

Mudryk, 58, is a longtime disability rights advocate and attorney, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Alameda Superior Court Judge Victoria Kolakowski became the state’s first openly transgender judge when she was elected in 2010, KXTV reported.
“Andi Mudryk is a great appointment and will be a wonderful judge,” Kolakowski tweeted, according to the television station. “I’m glad to finally have a trans colleague on the bench in California.”
“She (Kolakowski) is a wonderful person, a wonderful judge,” Mudryk told the Chronicle.
Mudryk’s appointment comes three days after another Newsom appointee became the first Latina to be confirmed to the California Supreme Court. The state's judiciary is among the nation’s most diverse, and has become more so under the governor. https://t.co/asYHqQtlyo

Mudryk fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Benjamin Davidian, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“I’m humbled, honored and I’m thrilled,” Mudryk told the newspaper on Friday. “I’m grateful to Gov. Newsom for creating a vision of California for all.”
Mudryk spent the first half of her legal career in private practice, including nearly 11 years with Disability Rights California, the Times reported. She served as managing attorney, director of litigation and deputy director.
She also served as director of litigation and policy advocacy at Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County from 2017 to 2018 and executive director at Disability Rights Advocates in 2017, Newsom’s office said.
Most recently, Mudryk has been the chief deputy director at the state Department of Rehabilitation and was the department’s chief counsel from 2018 to 2020, the Chronicle reported.
“As governors and state legislatures across the country attack the trans community, we applaud Gov. Newsom’s continued commitment to increasing trans representation,” Tony Hoang, executive director of Equality California, said in a statement. “California continues to remind the rest of the country that LGBTQ+ voices are essential to achieve full equality.”
Mudryk earned her law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1989, according to the Times.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

After the widespread vandalism and destruction that gripped downtown Denver last year went virtually unchecked, Governor Polis vowed a much harsher stance in 2021 in the form of reminder signs placed across the city.
“It’s time we make the message clear to would-be rioters that we simply will not tolerate it,” Polis said as he introduced his plan on Wednesday. “And what makes that message clearer than ‘Riot Free Zone’ signs?”
After spending approximately $1.2 million in taxpayer dollars to study the issue, Polis concluded that raging mobs generally lack awareness as to the acceptability of riots in their particular location.
The governor outlined additional details about his plan. “Well, first we place the signs. Next, I’ve instructed that during a riot, responding officers should point to the signs. I really think that ought to do it,” he continued. “But if the crowd still won’t disperse, we will stamp them out by distributing ‘No Rioting’ pamphlets which, by the way, include translation for our Spanish-speaking rioters.”
Polis was asked whether any aspect of his plan involves actual intervention. “Well, of course,” he replied. “If things get really out of hand, we will take a much more in-your-face approach to include sign spinners, inflatable tube men, and maybe even using airplane banners.”
If this plan proves a success, the governor intends to launch his “No Homicide Zone” window decal program, which he says should eradicate violent crime statewide.
I've been arguing that a lot of the reason it's so hard for CA gun owners to get rid of the anti-gun politicians is that we can't get favorable or accurate coverage from the newspapers and the broadcast media.
