Kes says we are now going to an 8 core/16 thread CPU. Would this be a Xeon?

I am ignorant on CPU types and best usage. My new PC is an i9-14900K. 24 core/32 threads. And Xeon CPUs better for server use than the 14900K?

Hell, I will donate my previous PC to the cause.

Asrock Z790 Pg Sonic mother board (latest BIOS)
Intel i9-13900K cpu 24 cores 32 threads
Kingston Fury Beast 64GB DDR5 memory
Samsung 980 PRO 1tb NVME ssd (4)
NZXT Kraken Elite 360 AIO cooler
Thermaltake Core V71 case
Plextor PX-L890SA DVD/RW drive
Cooler Master XG850 Plus 850 watt power supply
Windows 11 Pro (with key)
Office 2021 (with key)
Visual Studio 2022 Community (free)
MS SQL Server 2022 Developer (free)
Misc free software installed.

No video card as integrated CPU GPU was enough for me. Been running since last year. Little used.
I have it for sale on NevadaShooters for $1500. For Calguns taking free, if they want it.

Even the new one he is moving to is not enough, he needs a dedicated baremetal.

which means:

- dedicated CPU, 32 cores
- 16GB RAM
- SSD HD, integrated raid

calguns will be good for 2 years after that...

OR

split the servers into small virtual, most optimal.
- 4 core for forum
- 8 core for DB
- 4 core for images

In the second option, you wil lbe able to see what needs more juice and upgrade accordingly instead of one mondo upgrade..

Well, you are talking about a physical PC.  The forum is most likely in a datacenter on a virtual machine and the actual server there probably has a pretty beefy CPU and tons of RAM.  You pay for how much CPU and RAM you want and the host allocates it to your virtual server.  You can't really take a desktop machine and stick it in a datacenter and expect it to work very well.  Besides, you'd be paying $$$$ for the rental rack space and an ethernet connection - far more than you do for a virtual server.

What we are going to is a Managed Dedicated Server. No VPS and no 'home box'.
These are the basic stats.
128GB DDR4 RAM
2x2TB Storage
Software RAID-1
NVMe SSD
Xeon E-2388G
8 Core / 16 Thread
1 Gbps unmetered uplink connection

A 32 core CPU is never going to come with 16GB of RAM on a server.
The 32C/64T plan comes with 512GB of RAM, 6.4TB of storage and costs $900/month.

2005 called... to tell you to put the crack pipe down.  16GB ram is about 10x less than what this place needs.

Even with a dedicated server, split the front end/backend intwo two virtuals.
PHP s/w on frontend and DB ( guessing its mysql) on backend.
This way, you will know what is chewing CPU and if you need to split again, it wil be easier.
Just IMHO.
My 16GB comment was a typo, 512GB. Also make sure they are not saying 4 cores but have hyper threading turned on which is essentially 2 cores faking as 4.

You are all missing a piece.
A two disk RAID1 is never going to meet the needs.


As a guess , it will require......

Dedicated RAID controller (with Cache)  -  You don't want to be pulling main CPU cycles to maintain the RAID.
RAID1 - OS
RAID1 - DB
RAID1 - Indexes
RAID1 - Pictures
Hot Spare

Total 9 Drives.  Minimum (Assuming you don't go with RAID 5 or 6 or add a drive for the logs)
And depending on the software/user usage patterns maybe more.

3.2GHz proc 8 core will just be strangled on a RAID1

Even virtualized wont get you around the need for dedicated physical drives.
You can't avoid needing more drive heads to read more data.

SSD's can help, but large spinney disks are cheaper.

Hell, I should do this for a living... Oh, that's right I do.

Plus don't forget adding RAM in pairs is old school when looking at real Servers.
You may need to add RAM in 3's or as in my latest Server multiples of 8

Why would RAID drives be needed when the entire website and database can be placed into DRAM memory?  Kes had stated earlier that even 16GB of DRAM is enough.

Not to mention that the physical 'disk' memory of the server is on SSD which should be way faster than any RAID system as well.

I still think the bigger problem is nearly 2000 web crawlers attacking the site.  Access to forums should be LOGIN ONLY to get rid of them.
